Do you miss Xander / Cordelia as much as I do?  Hate Anya?  Talk about it on the Board.
Xander and Buffy are hanging out in the cemetery at night, discussing Xander's valentine's day present for Cordelia (a heart shaped pendant).  In the midst of their conversation a vamp pops out of the grave they're waiting by, and Buffy fights and kills him.  Xander makes the remark that slaying seems to be easier than dating Cordelia.  At school the next day, Cordelia gets the cold shoulder from Harmony and her little clique because she's dating Xander.  In class, Amy (from "the Witch", first season), Willow and Buffy discuss the Valentine's day dance at the Bronze later that night, just before Xander witnesses Amy apparently using magic on the teacher to make her think she turned in her paper.  Xander tells Buffy and Willow that he thinks Amy's following in her mom's footsteps by taking up witchcraft.

Just then, Giles shows up and tells Buffy he needs to speak with her.  Across the hall, Jenny Calendar walks out of her classroom and encounters the gang.  She asks Giles if he might have a moment to talk, but seeing Buffy's unwillingness to even LOOK at Jenny, Giles gives her the brush-off.  He and Buffy go to the library, where Buffy asks him if he's okay......as he obviously felt betrayed and lied to by Jenny after the whole Angel fiasco.  He says he's okay, but he's worried about Buffy.  He says he's been researching Angelus, and worries that he may use Valentine's Day to leave some grisly present for Buffy.

At the factory, Drusilla opens up Spike's valentine's day present to her......a necklace.  She appears to like it, but then Angel shows up, laying a still-warm heart down on the table in front of her as HIS valentine's day present to her, and she reacts much more favorably.  Spike is jealous as Angel takes the necklace out of its box and fastens it around Dru's neck.  At the Bronze, Xander and Willow sit at a table watching Oz's band "Dingoes Ate my Baby" play on stage.  Cordelia walks in, and gets the brush-off from her friends again.  At the slayer's house, Joyce brings Buffy a long black box that someone just brought for her.  Inside, Buffy finds some long stemmed roses and a card that reads only "soon".  Back at the Bronze, Xander spots Cordelia and gives her her present after an impassioned speech on how he's begun to really see something special in her.  She opens the present, says it's beautiful, and then tells him she wants to break up.  Xander gets upset, and Cordelia's sorry, but it's over.

At school the next day, Xander notices that everyone's laughing at him due to his being dumped by Cordelia.  He sees Amy in the hallway and grabs her.  He tells her he knows she's a witch, and wants her to do a love spell on Cordelia.  She tells him she needs a personal object of Cordelia's.  Xander finds her in the hallway, and demands the necklace back.  Cordy says she'll have to go get it. Going to her locker, Cordelia uses its door as cover as she pulls the necklace out from under her shirt and un-fastens it from her neck.  She gives it back to him and he leaves.  That night, Amy and Xander perform the spell at the school.

The next day, Xander confronts Cordelia, expecting her to be all smitten.  He's shocked when everyone seems to treat him with the amount of disrespect as usual.  In the library, Buffy tells Giles about the flowers and card from Angel, and Giles tries to research on Angel's past behavior to see what might be in store for her.  Xander comes in, and reflects upon how much his life sucks.  Much to his amazement, Buffy totally seems to be there for him.  Indeed, she comes on to him.  Xander is all excited about it, and when Amy shows up to tell him she doesn't think the spell worked, he could care less.....until AMY starts to come on to him.  And then another girl from one of his classes.  Xander suddenly gets the picture that something's up, and heads for home.  Unfortunately, he can't escape the madness there, as Willow's in his bed half naked.  She tries to get him to sleep with her, but Xander runs out.  Back at school, Cordelia is once again getting the cold shoulder from her friends, this time because she broke up with Xander and hurt him.

Xander arrives back at school, and there's a very funny scene where he's walking down the hall at school getting stares from all the girls.  He flees to the library, where he tells Giles what he's done.  Before Giles can even say a word, Jenny Calendar walks in to talk to him.  She sees Xander and is almost instantly smitten with him.  She starts pawing him, and Giles tears her away, keeping himself in between them.  He tells Xander to stay in the library while he takes Jenny and goes to try to find Amy and reverse the spell.  Moments later, Buffy enters the library wearing nothing but a short black trench coat and high heels.  SHE tries to get Xander to have sex with her.....and as much as he's tempted, he doesn't.  Amy comes in, and she and Buffy fight over Xander.  Buffy hits Amy, but Amy retaliates by turning Buffy into a rat.

Out in the hallway, a gang of girls surrounds Cordelia and they start smacking her around.  Giles re-enters the library with Jenny, and he and Xander try to capture "the buffy-rat".  Just then Oz comes in, and punches Xander.  He says that he was on the phone with Willow all night, who was crying about Xander.  While he says he doesn't know exactly what it was that Xander did, he was left with a very strong urge to hit him.  Oz seems to realize the ridiculousness of his own statement, and helps Xander up.   Giles sends Xander home before he causes any more trouble, and he and Oz continue to look for Buffy.  Out in the hallway, Xander sees the mob attacking Cordelia, and he rushes in and saves her.  He picks her up, and carries her out of the school, where he's met by Willow with an axe, and the rest of the school behind her.  The two mobs collide, and Xander and Cordy escape in the confusion.

The Buffy rat, meanwhile, has escaped to the basement, with Oz following.  Cordelia and Xander run to Buffy's house, and are let in by Joyce.  Suddenly SHE starts coming on to him, and Cordelia locks her out of the house.  She breaks back in, and Cordelia and Xander go upstairs to Buffy's room.  Along the way Cordelia deduces that Xander must have used witchcraft to get all of the women to fall in love with him.  Before he can even say anything, Angel pops in Buffy's window and throws Xander from the roof.   He's about to kill him and leave him as a bloody valentine's day present for Buffy, when Drusilla (also under the power of the spell) plucks Angel off of him and throws him against the tree in the front yard.  Angel is incredulous that Drusilla wants Xander, and assumes he really MUST have driven Druscilla crazy.  He backs off, and Drusilla asks Xander how he feels about eternal life.  Suddenly the girl-mob shows up and Drusilla backs off.  Cordelia runs out of the house and rescues Xander from the mob.  The go back inside, and the mob follows.  Drusilla is stopped short at the door, since she wasn't invited.

In the basement at school, Oz is still tracking the Buffy rat, and Giles and Amy are working on reversing the spell.  Cordelia and Xander lock themselves in the basement, and Cordelia learns that the spell was meant for her.  The mob breaks into the basement, and moves to kill Xander and Cordelia (everyone now wants to kill Xander as well, rather than see him with someone else).  Just then, Amy manages to reverse the spell and everyone stops in confusion.  Also at the same time, the rat turns back into Buffy.

At school the next day, everything is once again back to normal (love how that happens in Sunnydale), and Buffy thanks Xander for not taking advantage of her.  In the courtyard, Xander runs into Cordelia and her group, who insults him.  He starts to walk away, but Cordelia wails on Harmony....saying that she'll do whatever she wants without needing their approval, including dating Xander.  She walks away from them, and she and Xander leave together.

FLAWS:               More of a continuity problem....... there seems to be a lot of this particular kind on this show.  Xander and Cordelia leave the school in the daylight, with school still in session (which means it shouldn't be any more than two or three in the afternoon).  The next scene, they're running into Buffy's house, and it's night outside.  Now, Valentine's Day is in February, so it would still be getting dark earlier.......but I would say 6 or 7 would be the earliest it would get dark.  So where did those three or four hours go?

THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE:        This was an okay ep......pretty funny, actually.  It marks the first (though far from the last) occurrance where Spike's jealous of the new Angel, and starts to wish that maybe he'd never lost his soul again.  While I really liked Cordelia and Xander together, it - like almost everything else on this show - was destined not to be.  We do get a little insight into Xander's character, I think, when he's suddenly not interested in Cordelia anymore once he thinks Buffy likes him.  So, as cute as he and Cordy are together, it was doomed from the beginning, I think.

BEST LINE:      :  Lots of good Xander quotes in this one:
1)
Xander :  "Blackmail is such an ugly word."
Amy:  "I didn't say blackmail"
Xander:  "Right, but I'm about to blackmail you, so I thought I'd bring it up."
2)
Xander (to Cordelia):  "Do you know what's a good day to break up with somebody? Any day besides Valentine's Day! What, were you running low on dramatic irony?!"
3)
Amy:  "Oh, I don't know Xander.  Intent has to be pure with love spells.
Xander:  "Right.....I intend revenge; pure as the driven snow."
