Moments after the end of "The I in Team", Buffy tells the gang about how Maggie set her up to get killed. Spike thinks that Riley has to be in on it, but Buffy says that Maggie made sure Riley was far away before trying anything with Buffy. She refuses to believe that Riley's in on it, too. In any case, she knows that Walsh wants her dead, and Xander says she can't be happy that the entire scooby gang knows the Initiative is up to no good. Buffy says again that none of them are safe. We cut briefly to a bunker out in the woods, where Adam bursts the door open and escapes. Back at Giles', Buffy says they need to hide for awhile, and suggests Xander's basement. Just then, Riley comes in and asks Buffy if she's okay. She's surprised that he knows something happened, but tells him that Maggie tried to kill him. Riley thinks there must have been some kind of mistake, but then he suddenly sees Spike sitting on the steps and identifies him as hostile 17. Spike at first tries to play it off, but then eventually just admits it. Riley's upset, saying they've been looking for him for weeks, but he's been right there the whole time. Xander tells him to back off; that his boss just tried to make monster food of Buffy. Riley explains that Walsh told him Buffy was dead, but then he saw her on the monitor. He says this isn't like Maggie, and that something must be making her act this way. Giles says they think that Buffy may have been getting too close to something Walsh was trying to hide. He mentions the rumours he's heard about 314, and Riley becomes conflicted, saying he needs to sort this all out, and leaves.
Cut to the woods where Adam comes across a little boy playing with an action figure. He asks the boy what he is, and the boy tells him he's a monster. Adam replies "I thought so." Adam asks the boy what he is, and how he works, and then eyes his bone skewer thingy.
That night, Riley walks alone in thought along the street. In the 314 room, the doctor enters to find Maggie dead, and Adam gone.
The next morning Giles wakes up in Xander's apartment to the sound of cartoons, which Anya, Willow and Buffy are watching. Giles gets up and turns the tv off; he's irritable after spending the night there. Buffy tells them to chill, and Willow tries to reassure her about Riley, saying he just needs to work through some things. Anya says she should dump him, but Buffy says it's too late; she's already at the "I hurt when he hurts" stage. Xander comes running down the stairs ordering them to turn the tv on, and Willow does. There's a report on the boy's death in the woods, and Buffy makes the connection to the demon Maggie wanted them to catch with the bone skewers in its arms. Buffy says she's gonna go to the crime scene to see what she can find out, and orders the others to try to find out where the demon might be. Back at the dorm, Riley tells Forrest that Walsh tried to have Buffy killed. Forrest doesn't really believe it, and says if the professor tried to kill Buffy, then maybe Buffy needed killing. Just then Graham comes in with news of Walsh's death.
Down in the Initiative, Riley, Forrest and Graham walk into room 314 to see Maggie's dead body. Forrest notes the wound, and thinks that she's been staked. He hints that Buffy is responsible for the death. He and Riley start to get into a fight over it, but the doctor who found the body interjects and tells them this is not the time to be arguing. He tells them that Washington is sending in a team to do an investigation, and that his orders are to wait for their arrival until they do anything. Riley says it has to be the work of the demon they captured last week, and the doctor says probably, especially considering that it escaped the night before. He leaves, and Riley disobeys orders by instructing the rest of the commandos standing there to go suit up; they're gonna go track this demon down.
Cut to the commandos breaking into a bunch of crypts in the cemetery. Forrest and Graham enter Spike's, and notice that someone's been "squatting" there; that the tv's even still warm. They look around and don't find anything. When they leave, Spike sits up from inside the tomb thingy he was lying in to avoid detection.
At the crime scene, Buffy watches as some paramedics load the boy's body into the ambulance. Riley shows up in commando gear, and Buffy apologizes for earlier. She starts to explain about Spike, but quickly sees that Riley's not really paying attention. He tells her that Maggie is dead, and is really gruff with her. He won't tell her what happened, and Buffy realizes it's the same creature that killed the boy. She kinda snaps at him for his attitude, and leaves. Willow shows up at Tara's, hoping they can do a spell together. She then realizes that that's all she ever seems to do with Tara, and apologizes, saying that she likes Tara, and she doesn't want her to think she's just using her for magic. Tara says she knows, and Willow says the spell they need to do will help them locate demonic energy in the area.
Cut to Willy's bar (Yay, Willy! Yay, continuity!). Buffy enters, looking for information. Willy does his usual "I don't know anything" act, until he finally gives in and lets Buffy punch him once so he can give her the information he has, which isn't very helpful. Last he heard there was one a few weeks back, but she and "those army guys" picked him up and that was the last he knew. Buffy starts to question him about 314, but then Riley comes in and gets angry because he thought she was going to track the demon, and instead he finds her "socializing" with all the demons in the bar and a guy who deals in demon trade. Coupled with the fact that she'd been helping Spike, he's begun to wonder if she's really a good guy or not. He then kinda freaks out and draws a gun on an older woman who's trying to leave the bar. He says he doesn't know what the truth is anymore, or who to believe. He finally lets the woman go, and Buffy realizes he's shaking. He says he doesn't know what's happening to him.
In Xander's basement, Buffy tries to get Riley to rest, but he's too jittery. She notices that he's scratching his hand over and over, and she takes off the handkerchief thing she was wearing on her head and wraps it around his hand. Riley says he doesn't know who the bad guys are anymore; maybe he's a bad guy, and one of the people Buffy should kill. Buffy tries to reassure him, and gets him to lie down. She then goes to the other side of the basement where the rest of the gang is gathered, and tells them that something is affecting him physically. She wants Xander to go with her and infiltrate the Initiative, to try to find out what Maggie did to Riley. Giles wonders how she's going to get in, and Buffy reminds him of her clearance; banking that Maggie didn't have time to change it.
In Tara's dorm room, Willow and Tara perform a spell that's supposed to reveal demonic presences. Tara looks furtive, and when her part in the spell comes up she purposely does it incorrectly, but pretends that she performed her part. Willow wonders why it didn't work.
At Riley's dorm, Buffy, wearing glasses with her hair all pulled back into a bun, and Xander in cammando gear, go to the room with the mirror. Buffy stands in front of the full-length mirror and passes the retinal scan. She and Xander enter the elevator, and when they come out Buffy's got a lab coat on. They descend to the lower level. Cut to Xander's basement, where Willow tells Giles and Anya how the spell didn't work. Giles and Anya mention that the killing of the boy doesn't seem to fit the demon's profile, and that no one's actually seen this demon since it's alleged escape. Willow pulls back the curtain to look in on Riley, only to find him standing right there, looking all feverish and psycho. He asks where Buffy is, Willow says she went to find out what's making him sick. He denies being sick, and then realizes she went to the Initiative. Willow doesn't want him to leave, and he ends up knocking her out of the way to get out.
Back at the Initiative, Buffy and Xander overhear the doctor telling another doctor that the commandos don't know that they've been getting medicine in their food, and with Maggie's death everyone's schedule is messed up. That the last few commandos brought in were pretty strung out. They also mention that Riley hasn't been in yet, and he's worried about him.
At Willy's place, Spike comes in and orders a glass of O negative, but almost immediately another demon comes up and hits him.
At the Initiative, Buffy follows the doctor into the restricted area, and Xander keeps a watch out while she questions him about what they did to Riley. The doctor says that someone's sure to have seen them on the monitors, and they'll be caught any minute, but Riley shows up and hints that he took out the security system about ten minutes ago. The doctor orders Riley to take Buffy to the stockade, but Riley is clearly conflicted. Buffy makes the doctor confirm that Maggie tried to kill her, and the doctor says that the Initiative has no desire to take out the slayer; that it was Maggie's own vendetta. He tells her that project 314 escaped, and that Maggie was in charge of it. Riley gets angry, saying they're making her out to sound like some kind of obsessed woman. He turns on Buffy, and asks what she did to her. She tells him this isn't about them; that everything they need to know is right there, if they can only find out what was in room 314. Suddenly a body drops from the upper level in the room, and they look up to see Adam standing there. "Me," he says.
He jumps down to the lower level after revealing that he was the one who killed the boy, and Maggie. He says he wants to learn about himself, now, so he came home. He puts a disk into a slot in his chest, and "reads" from it about what he is. He's been pieced together from parts of other demons, and man, and machine. He considers Maggie his "mother", and says she's Riley's, too. He puts another disk into his chest, and reads Riley's file. He says that she "made" Riley, too, by taking and shaping his career, feeding him drugs to make him smarter and stronger, etc. Riley's upset by all of this, and attacks Adam. Adam easily fights him off, and quickly knocks Xander and Buffy down, too. He then skewers the doctor. Riley attacks him again, and he stabs Riley in the chest with his bone skewer thingy. Adam puts everyone out of comission, and then escapes back to the upper level, then through a duct in the ceiling just as some commandos barge in, led by Forrest. Xander tells them the demon escaped through the duct, and after Riley confirms it most of the commandos take off after it. Forrest orders Buffy to leave, saying they'll take care of Riley themselves.
Cut to Willy's place, where several demons throw a beaten-Spike out into the street. They're all mad because Spike's been killing other demons; working with the slayer. Spike lays there, all bloody.
The next day on campus, Buffy tells Willows he hasn't heard anything from Riley; he's locked in a medical ward. She wonders how she can go after the Initiative with all her energy now that this Adam guy is out there. Plus she's all worried about Riley. Willow says he'll be fine, but Buffy says he can't be. Everything he's ever believed in has been taken away from him; he has nothing to hold on to. Cut to Riley in the medical ward, all bandaged up. He looks at Buffy's handkerchief on his hand, and looks thoughtful.
FLAWS: In "A New Man", Spike says to Anya that a crypt wouldn't have electricity, and she wonders what he'll do for running water, and a fridge to keep his blood fresh. In this episode, the commandos enter Spike's crypt to find the tv still warm, meaning he was sitting there watching it before they came in. Sooooooooo, where did the electricity come from?
THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE: Was all right. As far as the history of big bads go in Btvs history, Adam is pretty much the most boring. But he did get to smack Buffy and Riley around in this episode a little, so that was kind of amusing. We find out that Maggie had some "plan" for Adam, and it may have involved Riley, and that Adam is curious about himself. We get a little groundwork for Spike working with the scoobies in the form of other demons being angry with him for fighting their kind. We also got to see Willy again : ) Tensions between Riley and the rest of the commandos continues to grow.
BEST LINE:
Riley: "That's hostile 17!" Spike: "No, I'm just a friend of Xander's. Oh, bugger it. I'm your guy."
