The conclusion of the "Buffy two-night event" picks up right where it left off, with Angel running outside in the rain, falling down and screaming Buffy's name. Buffy sleeps blissfully unaware in his bed. At the same time, Drusilla collapses to the floor and laughs, calling Angel's name. Buffy wakes up in bed and finds Angel gone. We see him outside lying on the ground.....he says "Buffy", and then "Oh no." A woman standing in the alley walks over to him, concerned. Puffing on a cigarette, she asks if he wants her to call an ambulance. He says no, as he stands. Then he whips around and bites her neck.....blowing smoke out of his mouth after he drops her (in a very cool move).
It's daylight, and Buffy sneaks home. She encounters her mom and is all nervous about Joyce finding out what she's done, but manages to escape with her secret intact. At the library, the rest of the Scooby Gang plus Jenny Calendar has gathered. Xander finds out that Buffy's never checked in, and he gets upset.....saying that they need to go find her. The rest of the gang says that they wouldn't stand much of a chance, but Willow sides with him, and they start to go to the factory, just as Buffy walks in. She gives them an abbreviated version of what happened the night before at the factory. In the hallway, Buffy tells Willow that she's worried about Angel, and wishes that he'd contact her.
At the factory, Angel shows up. Spike sicks the Judge on him, but he's unable to burn the humanity out of Angel, and Spike realizes that Angel's a vampire without a soul again. Drusilla rejoices, and Spike's glad that Angel's "back to normal". They fill him in on their plans to destroy the world, and he tells them to give him a night before they do anything, as he wants to destroy the slayer.
Back at the library, Cordelia and Xander make up from the tiff they had earlier, and they kiss. Willow sees them and runs out. Xander follows her, and they argue. Willow feels betrayed and hurt. Xander tells her that they were just kissing, and that it didn't mean that much. Willow says "No, it just means that you'd rather be with someone you hate, than with me." And she runs off. Elsewhere, Buffy wanders home, then decides to go to Angel's instead. She finds him there, and embraces him, relieved that he's okay. She's startled and hurt, however, when he makes light of the night before, and even insults her. He leaves without a backward glance.....leaving Buffy in tears.
At Jenny Calendar's uncle's hotel room, her uncle explains the full extent of the curse placed on Angel. He says that he was meant to suffer.....not to live as human. The original curse decreed that if ever he should feel true happiness, even if only for a moment, the soul that they had restored to him would be taken away from him. He then tells Jenny that it has already happened, and the vampire Angelus had already returned. Jenny is upset, saying that they're all fools for having done what they have. Her uncle tells her it is not justice they serve, but vengeance.
Back at school, Willow comes back and tells Xander that things are not okay between them, but that what's going on right now is more important. Xander starts to get an idea as to how to defeat the Judge, and suddenly the lights go out. Angel shows up in the hallway with them and says he's got something to show them. He tells Xander to go get the others, and bids Willow to come to him. She does, but Jenny shows up with a crucifix just as Xander gets a weird vibe and comes back. Angel snatches Willow, and tells them he has a message to deliver to Buffy. She shows up behind him, and when he turns around to face her Xander gets him with the cross. He grabs Buffy and plants a savage kiss on her, telling her that her "boyfriend is dead" and that things are about to get very interesting, then leaves.
In the library, the gang realizes the truth that Angel is no longer really Angel. Willow notices Buffy's horror and asks her if she's okay. Buffy says no, but that she should have realized what was wrong with him when she saw him earlier. Giles wants to know what was said, but Buffy says it was private. Willow asks Jenny how she knew that Angel was bad (from when she showed up with the crucifix and tried to get Willow out of harm's way), and she replies that she saw his face. Giles wonders what could have triggered the transformation in Angel, and Buffy realizes for the first time that it must have been their act of lovemaking. She gets upset and runs from the room despite Giles's questions. As she runs past Willow, Will realizes what must have happened and tells Giles to shut up. Xander tells the remainder of the group that he's got a plan, and arranges for Willow and Oz and Cordelia to meet him later with Oz's van.
Back at the factory, Spike's a little ticked that Angel didn't kill Buffy, and Drusilla determines that he wants to hurt her, the way he hurt Dru. Angel confirms this. He says that trying to kill Buffy by force will get them nowhere.......to kill her, "you have to love her". Back at her house, Buffy goes up to her room, crying. She looks at the cross Angel gave her when she first came to Sunnydale (Welcome to the Hellmouth), and then at her clauddaugh ring, that he had given her just the night before on the dock. She takes it off of her finger, and collapses on her bed, sobbing.
In Buffy's dream, we see scenes of her and Angel making love. Angel tells her that he loves her, and then she sees his face as a vampire. Then she's in the cemetery, in the daylight. standing at a graveside. Angel steps forward, smiling, and says "You have to know what to see". Buffy turns and sees Jenny Calendar pulling back a mourning veil. At school, Buffy marches right into Miss Calendar's classroom and throws Jenny down on the desk. Giles disperses the students, and Buffy asks Jenny if she "did it" (turned Angel back into a demon). Giles tells Buffy that she can't just go around accusing everyone, but stops short when Jenny admits that she knew what was going to happen. She tells them that she was sent there to watch Angel, and to keep him and Buffy apart. That Angel was supposed to pay for what he had done to her people. Buffy asks what SHE was supposed to be paying for. Jenny explains the "even one moment of true happiness" deal to Giles, and he asks how Buffy knows SHE'S responsible. She looks at him, and he suddenly realizes. Buffy wants Jenny to curse him again, but Jenny says that those magics are lost to her people, and she can't help. Buffy wants her to take her to someone who can, then. We flash to the Uncle's hotel room, where Angel shows up and kills him.
At the resident military base (since when did Sunnydale get a military base, anyway?), Cordelia, Xander, Oz and Willow arrive in Oz's van. Xander and Cordelia sneak in, and we discover that when Xander was turned into a soldier in the Halloween episode, he retained all of his soldier memories, knows the layout to the base, and where to find the big weapons. Out in Oz's van, Willow comes onto Oz, and he determines that it's because she wants to make Xander jealous. Even though he would like to kiss her, he doesn't want it to be for the wrong reasons. At the hotel room, Jenny, Buffy and Giles find Jenny's uncle's body. Giles says that Angel's trying to make it harder on Buffy.......she says that it's not working.......all it's doing is making it easier to kill him.
At the factory, we see Angel and Dru and the Judge and some other miscellaneous vampires head out.......while Spike looks on from his wheelchair. Back at the library the gang opens up a big box that was stolen from the military base. Jenny comes in wanting to know if there's anything she can do, and Buffy and Giles each tell her to get out.......it appears that Giles has also been hurt by Jenny's betrayal. She leaves. The gang heads to the factory, but sees that the vamps are already gone. Oz guesses that they've gone to the mall, as there are a lot of people there. At the mall, The vamps and the Judge show up and start burning people. Shortly thereafter, Buffy and the gang show up, and use the rocket launcher stolen from the base to obliterate the Judge. Dru runs screaming from the mall in her lunatic way, and the smoke from the exploded Judge sets off the sprinkler system. In the downpour, Buffy finds Angel in the movie theatre lobby, and they fight. Buffy gets the best of him, but is unable to bring herself to kill him.
Giles drives Buffy home, and he tells her things are going to get worse before they get better. Buffy worries that Giles has lost his respect for her, and is disappointed in her, but Giles says that he's not. He says that he knows she loved him, and that Angel had proven more than once that he loved her. He says that all she'll get from him is his support and respect. Inside, Buffy sits with her mother on the couch, and it's a very palpable sadness as Buffy sits in her own world of pain, and her mom is oblivious.
FLAWS: In the very end of the first part of this 2-parter, (Surprise), Angel runs outside into the rain, falling to the ground and screaming "Buffy!". In the beginning of this episode, the rain has stopped, and the ground is damp, but when Angel stands up, he's dry.
Also, the last time we saw Oz in his van was in "Halloween", and at that time the steering wheel was on the right side. In this ep, it's on the left. I suppose he could have bought a new van in between those two episodes, but that's kinda reaching.
THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE: This was a big episode.......the first of several in the series that changed everything. I and my fellow Buffy-watcher friends and family were very surprised that it wasn't a quick-fix, where Angel got turned back to normal by the end of the episode. Ultimately, this turned out to be a good thing. This also marks the first episode in which we hear the Angel and Buffy's love theme (when Buffy collapses on her bed crying, while looking at her ring).
BEST LINE: Lots of good ones (this is back when this show still HAD good lines).....several from the evil Angel, and a few Xander's. Best one I think is when Xander and Cordelia are stealing the rocket launcher from the military base. They have a discussion about whether or not looking at guns makes people want to have sex. Cordelia asks Xander if it does, and he says "I'm seventeen.....looking at linoleum makes me want to have sex."
