The episode starts out with this big green, horned demon in Cortona, Italy, in 1418.  A man kneels before him in abject worship.  The demon proclaims that all it needs is his love, and then he kills the human.  A group of clerks form a "circle" and weave a spell that imprisons "Mulloch the Corruptor" in a book.  Centuries later, Willow scans the book onto the library computer as part of a database computerization (getting all of the books on file, etc).  It is here that we meet Jenny Calendar.  She's a computer science teacher at the school, and she's in charge of the project.  She is immediately at odds with Giles, who sees computers as "idiot boxes".    The next day Willow tells Buffy that she's 'met someone' named Malcom on the net.  Buffy expresses her concern, and Willow gets defensive.  Later, Xander also says the online thing kind of bugs him.  We also see a couple other students under the influence of "Malcom".  One of them, a student named Dave, refuses to help Buffy when she comes to him to help her figure out who Malcom could be.

After school, Buffy follows Dave to C.R.D., a computer research laboratory.  Meanwhile, Malcom has pulled up Buffy's permanent file and shown it to another student, telling him to kill Buffy.  Buffy and Xander decide to break into C.R.D., and Willow herself has begun to have suspicions about Malcom.  Dave tells Buffy that Willow wants to meet her in the locker room, but it's really a murder attempt.  At the last second, Dave can't do it and warns Buffy before she would have been electrocuted.  Dave freaks out and tells Malcom he won't kill Buffy; Malcom then has the other student kill Dave, and make it look like a suicide.

Back in the library, Giles, Xander, and Buffy have figured out that Malcom is really Mulloch, and that he's in the computer.  They try to delete the file he was originally scanned into, but he has already escaped though the modem, and into everyone's computer.    Buffy looks for Willow, but finds Dave dead, instead.  Xander and Buffy head to C.R.D., where Willow has been taken, and Giles convinces Jenny Calender to help him perform the spell to eradicate Mulloch from the Internet.

At C.R.D., Willow meets up face to face with "Malcom", a mechanically constructed body designed to hold the Mulloch demon.  Miss Calendar is able to form a circle online with her fellow 'technopagans', and she and Giles cast the spell of restraint...isolating him  his mechanical body.  Buffy then destroys him by electrocution.  He blows up, and all is normal again.  In a humorous parting shot, Buffy, Willow and Xander all lament that their love lives are doomed.

Flaws:

Totally a flaw in this one...and it's not nitpicking, either.  When 'Malcom' pulls up Buffy's permanent file to show the student, he first pulls it up in the principal's office.  On that screen, we see a picture of Buffy and some statistics.  Her year, GPA (2.8) etc.  On that screen, she's listed as a sophmore.  But then he pulls the record up on a computer in the lab, and she's listed as a senior.

Thoughts on the Episode:  While I suppose it was inevitable that we'd have an episode where Willow got an evil-online boyfriend, I didn't really think too much of this one.  A bunch of staring at computer screens, and not much action.

Best Line:

After Buffy gets (sort of) electrocuted, she goes to the Library.  She's all fried looking, and asks Xander

"Be honest..how's my hair?"
Xander:  "It's great! It's your best hair EVER"
