Buffy trains rather viciously in the back room of the Magic Box, beating the crap out of a big puffy punching bag thing, while complaining to Giles that Spike's got a thing for her.  She pounds on the punching bag, and Giles tells her perhaps she should calm down, and from inside the puffy body suit Xander agrees.  Buffy apologizes for getting carried away.  She bemoans that Spike is attracted to the very things about her that drive other men away. Xander reassures her that there'll be another "good one" to come alone who'll love her, and Buffy hugs him.  Cut to outside the coffee shop, where a man pulls over and drops off a woman.  He asks her if she's sure she wants to get out here after she thanks him for the ride, and asks her what she's looking for in Sunnydale.  "True love," she replies.

The next morning, Buffy and Dawn admire Joyce's new dress, and Joyce is nervous about her date that night with some guy named Brian.  She asks Buffy for advice on what kind of restaurant to go to, but Buffy says she is soooo not the right person to be giving love advice.  She's had exactly two boy friends, and both of them left town.  Joyce says she's  just had some bad luck, and Dawn suggests maybe she'll meet someone at the party she's going to that night.

Cut to Anya and Tara walking along talking about computers and investments, and Anya mentions that she's tripled the money she's made from working at the magic shop so far.  The girl who got dropped off on the street the night before comes up, in the same dress, and says she's looking for Warren.  Anya and Tara say they don't know any Warren, and she thanks them in a very chipper way and walks off.

At the party that night, Buffy sees Ben and kind of flirts with him.  She asks him to dance, and he says sure, and he goes off to dump his drink.  The girl from earlier shows up and starts asking around for Warren again. Some guy overhears her, and grabs his girlfriend and runs out.  "What's wrong, Warren?" his girlfriend asks.

The girl approaches Xander, Willow and Anya, and both Willow and Xander think she's hot.  She asks for Warren again, but seems kinda simple when they asks Warren who?  She wonders off, still looking for him.  Buffy continues to wait for Ben, and is startled when Spike comes up.  He asks if she's trolling for her next ex, and she just glares at him and then says she thought she told him to get lost.  Spike replies that it's a free country, and dares her to make him leave.  She tells him to get away from her, and he finally acquiesces, going off a bit to watch her interact with Ben when he comes back.  Ben gives her his number, saying he thought he should before she sees him dance. Buffy says she thinks she should tell him that she kind of has a bad history, that usually ends with the guy leaving town, and Ben implies that he's like to get to know her better.  Buffy smiles and says she'll call him, and Spike looks disappointed and stalks off.  He finds the girl looking for Warren, (who says her name is April) and comes on to her, trying to get Buffy jealous.  April picks Spike up and throws him out the window, saying his remarks were inappropriate; that no one can touch her but Warren.  Buffy stops her when she turns to leave, and April throws her across the room, twisting her arm.  She then apologizes for hurting Buffy, and leaves.

Later on, Buffy and the gang wonder at April's unusual strength.  The general concensus is that she must be a robot.  They figure that "Warren" must be the guy who built her, and Willow agrees to start looking for students with the first name Warren.  Back home, Giles leaves just as Joyce returns from her date and tortures Buffy a bit about the specifics of how far she went with Brian.  Buffy runs upstairs, covering her ears.  Hee.  That night, April goes from door to door in Sunnydale, waking people up and looking for Warren.

The next morning Willow finds an address for a guy named Warren who goes to a local tech college.  Buffy prepares to go talk to him, but Giles urges that she wait until they figure out what his motivations might have been.  Everyone else seems to think it's pretty clear that she's a sex-bot, and Willow thinks it's kind of sad that he couldn't just find a normal person, and had to make one up on his own.  Buffy naturally makes it all about her by comparing this "Warren"'s situation with her own, afraid she won't ever find someone normal who will  love her just for her, and she goes into the training room and calls Ben.  Cut to Glory, turning into Ben. Ben morphs in, and picks up the phone.  Buffy asks him out for coffee, which he agrees to, and hangs up.  He looks down at his clothes to find he's wearing a red dress.  Also, he's at Glory's apartment.

At Warren's house, Warren packs his bags as his girlfriend wonders what the hell is wrong.  He tells her he doesn't have time to explain, and opens the door to leave with her.  Buffy's standing at the door, however, and Warren immediately guesses that "this is about her".  Buffy confirms it, and Warren's girlfriend (Katrina) wants to know yet again what is going on. He finally tells her to shut up, and she storms out.  Buffy introduces herself to Warren, saying that they went to Sunnydale High together, and does he know who she is?  He says yes, and wants to know if April has hurt anyone.  Buffy says no, well, no one who matters, and Warren says she followed him there.  He tells Buffy that April is a robot, but Buffy already knows.

Cut to the Magic Box, where Spike comes running in, his blanket on fire.  Everyone's pretty hostile toward him after what he did to Buffy in "Crush", and Spike tries to spin it so that it was him and Buffy teamed up against Dru, who was up to no good, but nobody's buying it; even Dawn.  In a Ripper moment, Giles shoves Spike up against a book case, and tells him that they're not his friends, and they are not his way to Buffy.  There is no way to Buffy.  Spike leaves.  At the coffee shop, April continues to ask people where Warren is.  Some jerk tells her he was just there, and he went "that way"; if she hurries she might catch him.  April gushes a thank you, saying that she was getting very tired, and runs off.

Intercut scenes of April looking around Sunnydale as Buffy questions Warren at his place.  Turns out, as predicted, Warren built April to be his girlfriend.  He says that soon after, though, he got bored with her.  He thought he was crazy, because she was perfect.  But she was so predictable.  He fell in love with Katrina in his engineering class, and left April.  Buffy is disgusted to learn that Warren didn't even tell April that he was leaving, he just left without saying a word to her, "without even giving her a chance to fix what was wrong". Obviously, Buffy is identifying, again.  Warren says he thought her batteries would run out soon; indeed, they should've run out by now.  He doesn't know why they haven't; she must be recharging them somehow.  Buffy wants to know how they can find her, and he tells her that she's looking for him, so she's got to be close.

Cut to the play ground.  April runs into Katrina and asks her if she knows where Warren is.  Katrina blows a fuse and says Warren is her boyfriend, and "all you others better realize that".  April becomes alarmed, and wants Katrina to say that she was lying.  Katrina can't say anything, however, because April is crushing her chest (while trying to keep her from running away) and she can't breathe.  Quick cut to Spike, throwing all of his Buffy-shrine stuff into a box, saying "Damn right I'll get over it."

Back at the playground, Buffy and Warren are wandering around looking for April, with Warren calling her name at the top of his lungs.  They find her, and she's holding an unconscious Katrina.  Buffy takes Katrina from April, and ascertains that she's alive.  April asks Warren if she did something wrong, but Warren says no.  April says she waited a long time; she knitted him five sweaters.  Warren starts to tell her to go back and get them, hoping that her batteries will wear out, but Buffy tells him he has to tell her, and do it right. Warren hesitantly tells her that he thought he made her with everything he really wanted, but she isn't what he wants.  He doesn't love her. He suddenly points to Buffy and says that he loves her.  April freaks out and attacks Buffy, and during the fight Katrina wakes up.  When April gets injured and her parts show through her abdomen (not as gross as it sounds, really  ;)     ), Katrina shouts that April is a robot. Warren says "She wasn't just for sex," and Katrina realizes that April is Warren's ex girlfriend.  She runs off, and Warren chases her, trying to explain.

Buffy and April continue to fight until April's batteries run down far enough so that she can't fight very well.  Later, she and Buffy sit on some swings, and April wonders if she waits patiently for Warren this time, that maybe he'll come back.  Buffy realizes that April is dying and feels sorry for her, and says she's sure he will.  April says that when things are at their saddest, you just have to be patient.  Smiling, she continues to have an optimistic outlook, until her batteries run down completely and she dies.

Later on, Buffy talks about April with Xander.  She says that April devoted everything she had to this guy, but it still wasn't enough.  She says she's just not ready for all of that again yet, and that she needs to just be alone for awhile.  She calls Ben and leaves a message on his machine saying that she can't go out with him because this isn't the best time for her to be with anyone else.  On the other end of the line, Glory and Jinx listen to the message and Glory thinks that Ben must be working against her.....then she can't believe that Buffy turned "them" down.

Cut to Warren's, where he tries frantically to explain to Katrina over the phone what happened.  She hangs up on him, and when he turns around Spike's standing there with his box, having been invited in by his mother.  He tells him Warren's going to make a robot for him, and Warren looks into the box to see a picture of Buffy looking back up at him.

The next day, Buffy comes through the front door and shouts out that she's home.  No one answers, though, and she looks around and finds Joyce lying on the couch, staring up at the ceiling unblinkingly.  She calls to her a few times, but gets no answer.  The shot stays on Buffy's face as she realizes that Joyce is dead.

THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE:     Naturally, this episode sets up the whole idea of the Buffy-bot, and it introduces the character Warren who reappears in season 6.  And also, obviously, it sets us up for the events in "The Body".

BEST LINE:

Spike (to Buffy):  "If you want me to leave, you can put your hands on my hot, tight little body and make me."

and:

Spike:  (to April):  "Bloody hell! You threw me through a window!  What's that about?"

April:  "You can not make those suggestions to me.  You are not my boyfriend.  Warren is my boyfriend."

Spike:  "You know what? My bleeding sympathies to Warren!"

and:

Buffy ( to Giles):  "What'd she make you do?"

Giles:  "Well, we listened to aggressively cheerful music sung by people chosen for their ability to dance.  And we ate cookie dough and talked about boys."
