The episode starts out with Drusilla cornering a boy in the playground at night just before she attacks him, Angel intervenes and sends him home. Drusilla recognizes Angel, and he says "hello, Drusilla." He tells her to take Spike and leave Sunnydale, or else things will go badly. She asks him if he'll hurt her if she doesn't...but then says, "no you can't, can you? Not anymore" She says that her "dear boy has gone all away" to her, to the Slayer. She says his heart stinks of her...she places her hand on his chest just as Buffy notices them from a rooftop. They part, and Buffy is left wondering what's going on that he's not telling her.
The next day at school, Giles is trying to figure out what Jenny Calendar's got planned for their date that night. Giles gives Buffy the night off because she seems to be down about something. In class, Buffy's passing notes with Willow about the mystery girl the night before. The gang exits to the lounge, where Xander reflects upon Buffy's moping. Suddenly, one of Buffy's old classmates from L.A. shows up..his name is Ford, and he says he's been transferred to Sunnydale because his Dad got a job there. It turns out that Billy Fordham was Buffy's big fifth grade crush. She invites him to go along with the gang to the Bronze that night.
At the Bronze, Buffy runs into Angel getting a drink at the bar. She quizzes him on what he did the night before, and he tells her he stayed in and read. Buffy abruptly leaves and heads back to the gang playing pool. Angel follows, and Ford introduces himself to Angel. Angel automatically seems to be jealous, and also a little suspicious about Ford. Buffy leaves with Ford, and Angel vanishes when Willow and Xander aren't looking. Walking outside, Buffy notices a vampire attack. She sends Ford back to get "her purse", and goes ahead to slay the vamps. Ford is suspicious, and comes back. A girl runs by him crying, and Ford watches Buffy slay a vamp. He tells her that he already knew she was the Slayer...he'd known since they went to school together in L.A. Later, we see Ford admitted into an underground club where there's music, and all sorts of vampire paraphernalia. Everyone's dressed in Goth, and it seems to be a vampire-wannabe hang out. Ford hints about some plan that will help them all become vampires.
At Willow's house, Angel has shown up. She invites him in, and he expresses concern over Ford. He wants Willow to do a search for him on the net, and see if she can find anything suspicious about him. Willow asks him if he's not just jealous because of Ford's relationship with Buffy, and Angel admits to it. But he also says that there seems to be something up with Ford. Willow runs the search, and finds that Ford doesn't have any records with the school...it doesn't look like he really transferred. He leaves, but asks Willow to keep their search a secret from Buffy until they find out what's going on. At school the next day, Willow's got a case of the guilts from lying to Buffy, and Giles gives Buffy the number to Jenny Calendar's "beeper thingy" in case she needs him for anything. He tries to covertly refer to the slaying thing, but Buffy tells him that Ford knows.
That night, Buffy is giving Ford the tour of Sunnydale. They see a couple vampires trying to break into the school. Buffy goes after them, and Ford follows, with his own stake. While Buffy is taking care of one of the vamps, Ford makes a deal with the other one...telling her she's got one chance to live, if she tells him what he wants to know. He then tells Buffy that he killed her. Willow has dug up the address to the club Ford went to before, and Willow, Xander and Angel head there. Inside, they "in no way stick out like sore-thumbs". They confirm that this is a little society of vampire-wannabe's. While talking about it, one of Ford's friends overhears them. Back at the library, Buffy has sent Ford home, and beeped Giles and Miss Calendar away from the Monster Trucks that Jenny took Giles to see. They arrive and Buffy finds a picture of Drusilla on Giles's desk. She asks who she is, and Giles tells her that Drusilla is a longtime paramour of Spike's, but was killed by an angry mob in Prague. Buffy tells Giles that she's seen this girl in Sunnydale.....with Angel. Just then, they discover the vampire that Ford "killed" stealing one of Giles's books. It escapes, and brings the book back to Spike.
Back at Spike's, he confronts Drusilla about her meeting Angel the night before. Ford finds his way inside and talks to Spike. He wants to make a deal; he wants Spike to make him a vampire, and he'll give Spike the Slayer. At Buffy's house, Angel shows up and tells her that Ford is not what he seems. Before he even gets to it, Buffy confronts him about Drusilla. She wants to know the truth. Angel asks if Buffy loves him. She says she does, but she doesn't know if she can trust him. Angel tells her the story. He tells her that Drusilla was the worst thing he had done when he was a vampire. She was pure, and sweet, and chaste, and Angel had been obsessed with her. He killed everyone she loved, and drove her mad. She fled to a convent, and on the day she took her vows, he changed her into a vampire. He then tells Buffy about Ford's little vampire-revering society, and that she can't trust him. Buffy feels like she can't trust anyone at this point.
At school the next day, Buffy makes plans to see Ford that night. He says he has a secret, and wants to surprise her. Willow apologizes for keeping stuff from Buffy, and Buffy forgives her. At the vampire club, Ford tells "Diego" and Chantrell that everything's on for that night. Diego tells Ford about Angel, Willow and Xander's appearance the night before, and Ford gets mad, afraid it's going to throw off his plans. They are all surprised, however, when Buffy is already there. She figures out Ford's plans, but he's rigged all of the doors to be locked from the outside. Elsewhere, Spike and his minions are preparing to storm the club and break in. Buffy is still trying to figure a way out, and at least get the rest of the people out. Ford tells her there's no way out, and also why he's doing this. He's got tumors in his brain, and doesn't want to die. He's agreed to let the vamps feed on all of the other people in the club, and take Buffy, and in return he gets to live forever. Buffy pleads with him to stop this before it's too late, and he seems moved by her words, but won't help. Then Spike arrives. The vamps break in and begin to feed, but Buffy takes Drusilla hostage, and Spike orders the vamps to let them go. Buffy throws Drusilla down the stairs after Spike, and runs out, locking the door behind her, trapping all of the vampires inside. Buffy meets Angel, Xander and Willow outside, and tells them they'll have to come back later for the body. Xander asks for what body, and we cut back to inside. Ford (who had been knocked out) wakes up, and demands his reward.
The next day, Buffy goes back and finds Ford's body at the foot of the stairs. After he's buried, she and Giles speak at his grave. She asks him if things are always this hard, if nothing is ever simple anymore. Giles tells her that it's called Growing Up. Just then, Ford rises from the grave as a vampire, and Buffy stakes him.
Flaws:
Kind of a weird one. After Buffy finds out what Ford is up to, she arranges to meet him that night at the school at 9pm. She goes early to their little underground club, however, and figures out what the plan is. At 6:27, Ford's watch beeps, and he tells everyone it's sunset. Shortly thereafter, Spike and his vamps break in. That doesn't quite make sense. Ford had it all set so that when Buffy came in she'd be trapped, and only the vamps would be able to open the doors from the outside. So why did he arrange to meet her at nine, knowing the vamps were gonna be showing up before seven?
Thoughts on the Episode:
This episode lays a little groundwork for upcoming episodes, with the book being stolen from Giles's collection for Spike, and also tells of Angel's history with Drusilla. We also meet a character that shows up again in the third season...the vampire-wannabe named Chantrell, who gets bitten by Spike, but escapes when Buffy gets everyone freed.
Best Line:
Ford: "I wanna be like you...a vampire." Spike: "I've known you for two minutes and I can't stand you; I don't really feature you living forever (to Drusilla), can I eat him now, love?"
and also....
Xander: (mimmicking Buffy) "This is Ford, my bestest friend of all my friends. Jeez, doesn't she know any fat guys?!"
