At the high school, Buffy looks around for Riley, but he's not there.  Instead, Riley is at Adam's lair.  Adam calls Riley "brother", and says they have a lot to discuss.  Suddenly Riley seems to be under Adam's control, and demands to know what he did.  Adam says it wasn't him, it was Walsh.  She had a behavioral modification chip implanted in Riley, too, in his chest.  Riley's angry and frustrated, because he can't do anything, but Adam promises him power once he's "forgotten his old life".   He starts to go on about this grand plan Maggie ("Mother", as he calls her) had for the both of them, but Spike walks in and interrupts, wanting the chip out of his head now that he's done his part.  He gets distracted seeing how stiff Riley is, and starts poking at him.   Hee.  Adam tells Spike that he's glad he's gotten Buffy and her friends split up, and that's how he wants her:  alone. But where he wants her is down in the Initiative.  He says he wants her to kill an equal number of demons before she's too tired to go on.  Riley starts to say "No, you can't," but Adam orders him to stop talking and he has to.

Spike says that once Willow gets the disk de-encrypted, Buffy will be able to get down into the Initiative, but then realizes he just split the scooby gang up, and none of them want to talk to the others. Adam says he failed, and Spike, still anxious to get his chip removed, leaves to find a way to get Buffy down into the Initiative.

Giles answers the door in his bathrobe with a hangover, and Willow comes in to get her laptop as Giles glances uncomfortably at Tara in the doorway.  Willow and Tara leave.  Back at the dorm room, Buffy sits alone on the floor by her bed before picking up a picture of herself, Willow and Xander.  Obviously not wanting them all to be mad at each other like this, she picks up the phone as if to call them, but changes her mind and goes instead to collect some weapons in a bag.  At Xander's, Anya comes down to the basement to find Xander still in bed, depressed over the fight.  He tells her that he's so upset about it because he thinks maybe Buffy and Willow are right to think he's a direction-less loser.  Anya tries to comfort him, telling him that he's a good person and a good boyfriend, and that she's in love with him.  Xander looks surprised at the "love" part, but he's still depressed over the fight.

In the cave, Buffy enters with a big old axe, looking for Adam, but he's not there. Instead, Adam and Riley are entering a hidden lab in the Initiative.  To Riley's horror, he finds that Professor Walsh and the doctor and Forrest have all been resurrected, and are now pieced-together human / machine / demon hybrid things.  He asks Adam if that's what's going to happen to him, but Adam says they're just workers.  Riley's part is much bigger.

Back at the cave, Buffy's still looking for Adam when she comes across Spike.  Buffy says Adam's moved out; he must be close to doing whatever he's going to do.  Spike asks whatever became of the disks he brought them, and Buffy says Willow's got them.  Spike says that just because she and Willow had a falling out, that's no reason to ignore what might be on the disks.  Buffy's expression becomes calculated and she agrees with him when he mentions the rift between herself and Willow: which Spike shouldn't know about.

In Tara's dorm room, Willow continues to work on the disks, but suddenly they start de-encrypting themselves.  Willow says that doesn't make any sense.  Just then, Buffy calls.  Back at the Initiative, Riley tries to talk to Professor Walsh, but Maggie's too zombie-like.  Forrest says that technically, Maggie's still dead.  Riley says so is Forrest, but Forrest disagrees.  He retains all of his memories, but has lost his human doubts, weaknesses and insecurities.  He says that Adam will do the same to Riley, and then he and Forrest will be on the same side again.  Maggie injects Riley with something.

Out on the campus, Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles meet in silence, their expressions reminding each other of the falling out they all had the night before.  Buffy asks them each who told them the things they were mad about, and everyone realizes it was Spike, every time.  Everyone's a bit sheepish.  Willow wonders why Spike was playing with their minds, and Buffy thinks he's working with Adam.  She tells them how Spike was so keen for Buffy to get the info from Willow on those disks, and Willow tells her how the disks de-encrypted themselves.  She says what was on the disks was basically info they already knew, plus a final phase that involved a secret lab in the Initiative, and Adam making a whole army of pieced-together super bad guys.

Buffy realizes that Adam has deliberately orchestrated the capture of all of the demons currently caged in the Initiative, so that they can attack from the inside.  Demons versus commandos, and in the aftermath he'll have a whole slew of body parts to start building his army from.  Xander wonders why Adam wants Buffy to be there, and Buffy postulates that he wants her to even the kill ratio, and that he's not worried about her killing him at all.

Back down in the secret lab, Riley sits immobilized in a chair, as Spike insists that Adam get the chip out of his head now.  Adam contemplates, and says not until Buffy's there.  At Giles', the gang tries to come up with a way to kill Adam, but nothing seems like it'll work, due to his extreme power.  Willow says they should try a spell, and Giles thinks of an immobilizing spell that has to be said in Sumerian.  Giles happens to speak Sumerian, but he's not a witch.  And the witch has to be within a certain distance during the casting, anyway.  Off the cuff, Xander suggests that all they need is a super combo Buffy; one with super Slayer strength, Willow's witch-y-ness, and Giles' multi-lingual power.  He realizes that's not very likely, though.  Giles, however, looks intrigued.

The gang enters Riley's dorm, and comments that while an enjoining spell is very effective, it's also very dangerous.  Buffy smashes the mirror / door to the elevator, and they repel down the elevator shaft.  Going down side by side, Buffy apologizes to Willow for how separated the group has gotten this year.  Willow says it's natural, first year of college and all. But Buffy says that's not how she wants it; she wants them all to be together.  She misses them.  She says she was so busy with her own stuff that she kind of drifted away.  Willow says they all did; she did too.  Buffy tells her she loves them all, and they hug while still in the shaft.  They drop down on top of the elevator, and hug again.  Xander drops down a moment later, and they hug him too, talking about how much they love him.  Xander goes "Oh God, we're gonna die, aren't we?"  When he realizes they're all making up, he calls up to Giles to come join in the group hug.  Cut to Xander prying open the elevator shaft doors ....  only to reveal a bunch of commandos holding guns on them.

In the secret lab, Adam watches on a monitor as Buffy and the gang are escorted by the commandos.  He says that Spike failed him again, because all of her friends are there with her.  Spike tries to run, but Forrest grabs him.  Adam orders him to take Spike's head off, but Spike, who apparently was still holding on to his cigarette even though the running-for-his-life thing, puts the cigarette out in Forrests' eye and runs out.

Buffy and the gang (and a lot of commandos) are in a briefing room with the CO.  He's pretty pissed that they all just waltzed in there again.  Buffy tries to get him to listen, and explain that Adam is there, but the colonel thinks she's lying.  Buffy points out the over crowded cells and says Adam's trying to trojan horse the Initiative, but the CO insists every inch of the operation is under surveillance.  "Even the secret lab?" Willow asks.  The CO's never heard of the lab, or the 314 project.  Just as he's going on and on about how he's in control, all the lights go out and a tech says that the main power grid is down, and backup is not responding.

In the lab, Adam sits at a console and controls all the grids.  Back in the briefing room, the tech can see all of the cell doors open as all of the demons are released and start attacking people.  The CO takes the commandos and head to the armory, leaving two soldiers guarding Buffy and the gang.  The instant the CO leaves, Buffy takes out the two guards, and orders Willow to find out where Adam is via the Initiative's system.  Giles says the enjoining spell is very touchy; risky, and they need a place to perform it where they won't be interrupted, where they'll be close to her, and where it'll be quiet.  "Quiet?" Xander asks, looking at the monitors.  Outside in the Initiative, all hell is breaking loose.  Demons and humans are fighting all over the place.  Amid the bedlam, there's a very cool slow-mo scene in which Spike starts fighting the demons.

Back in the room, Willow figures out where the secret lab must be, after following the air duct and electrical plans.  Buffy says great, now they know where they have to go; they just have to get there.

Xander covering them with a blast rifle, Buffy leads the way across the huge main room of the Initiative, cutting a swath through the fighting demons and humans and vampires.  They make it to the other side, and enter the restricted area.  Inside room 314, they find the unmarked passageway and Buffy goes in alone, leaving the others to do the enjoining ritual.

Climbing down into the secret lab, Buffy sees Riley still immobilized in his chair thing, and goes to him.  She asks him if he's okay, but he doesn't answer.  Buffy's confuse.  Riley looks behind Buffy, and she turns to see the two zombies, and then Adam entering.  He says Riley can't answer her because he hasn't been programmed to, and orders Forrest to kill her.  Forrest is all too happy to oblige, and attacks her.  Maggie comes at her with a surgical saw, but Buffy kicks her back.  She struggles with Forrest, and in the process knocks over a beaker, breaking the glass near Riley's hand.

In room 314, the gang starts the spell.  In the lab, Buffy continues to fight Forrest, as Riley grabs a jagged piece of glass and cuts into his chest.  In 314, the gang each takes a card.  Willow takes spirit, Xander takes heart, Giles takes mind.  In the lab, Riley digs into the wound in his chest with his fingers, searching for the chip, as Buffy and Forrest keep fighting.  Finally Forrest gets her pinned down on a table and Maggie and the doctor move in to help hold her down, just as Riley yanks the chip out.  He yanks the tubes out of the chests of Maggie and the doctor, and Buffy tells him she's got to get to Adam NOW.  He tells her to go, and he faces off with Forrest.

Out in the main room, the CO has finally gotten some guns, and he and his men start fighting the demons back.  In Adam's control room, Buffy confronts Adam. They fight a bit, and Buffy breaks his skewer off.  Adam says he's got another arm, and a huge gun extends from his other arm.  He fires at Buffy and she takes cover behind some consoles.  Back in 314, the gang finishes the spell, and suddenly Buffy is infused.  The console blows up, but Buffy rises from it untouched.  She's suddenly got these freaky yellow eyes, and starts spouting some funky language.  "Interesting," Adam says, and then fires at her again.  All of the bullets do a "Matrix" thing where they stop in front of Buffy in the air, and suddenly Adam doesn't look as confident.

Back in 314, some demons struggle to get in the room.  That would be bad, since Giles said the spell was touchy, and they needed to not be interrupted.  In the lab, Riley and Forrest continue to fight until Riley manages to kill Forrest by exploding him with a flammable, pressurized tank.  In the control room, Adam fires a grenade at Buffy but she waves her hand and it turns into a few doves.  She waves her hand again, and his gun retracts.  Adam's confused.  Buffy walks toward him and suddenly she's super-Buffy, and is kicking the crap out of Adam.  He asks how she can be doing this, and she tells him that he can never hope to grasp the source of "their" power.  She then throws him across the room and does the "Matrix" kick on him.  You know, the one where Neo jumped in the air and kicked Morpheus like, 4 times before coming back down?  That's what she does.  Then she punches her fist into his chest and yanks out his power supply.  Adam falls to the floor, dead, and Riley enters just as super-Buffy levitates the power source and destroys it.  He touches her, and she collapses as the energy from the rest of the gang goes back to them.

Xander, Willow and Giles all come to themselves, sweating and weak in 314.  A demon finally manages to break through the door, but is killed by a quickly-following Spike.  He says it's a good thing he was there to save them, and Giles points out that his heroism is negated by the fact that he was working with Adam to start a war that would kill them all.  Xander says Spike probably only saved them so they wouldn't stake him right then and there.  Spike wonders if it worked.  The gang gets up but doesn't stake him, just as Buffy and Riley emerge from the lab for the most part unscathed.  Buffy says everyone was great, but that there are still people out there dying.  She orders the gang to try to find a way to open the exits, Riley to take charge of the Initiative guys, and she'll take point.  They head out.

Cut to a Pentagon-style briefing.  A group of men in suits sit around a table, and one talks about what happened at the Initiative.  He says that they suffered a 40% casualty rate, and had it not been for one deserter and a group of civilians, they might have lost them all.  His monologue is intercut with montages of the battle at the Initiative.  Buffy fighting, Riley killing a demon, Graham seeing Riley fighting, trying to decide to join him or not, and then ultimately doing so, along with a group of commandos.  Xander helping everyone to get into the elevator shaft.  The guy in the suit says that Maggie Walsh had a brilliant vision, but ultimately the demons cannot be controlled.  He orders  the Initiative shut down, burned down, and the earth salted.  It's the end of it.

FLAWS:                        This episode took place the day after "The Yoko Factor", and Riley, being human, should have still had his bruises and cuts from that episode, when Angel beat the crap out of him.  But he doesn't.

THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE:              You know, I'd never seen this one, in all this time.  Not until I got to this ep in the re-vamping of the site did I actually watch it for the first time.  And I've gotta say, it's not bad.  Sure, it kinda wraps everything up all nice and neat, and that's not very realistic, but it does have an interestingly cinematic quality to it that I found appealing.  There were a lot of nice action scenes, and I did like the way they kinda got back to the core scoobies.  I don't really think the Riley / Forrest stuff was necessary, but I guess since he was a cast member at that point they had to do something with him.  There were also a couple continuity points I wanted to give out.  First, nice tribute to "Prophecy Girl" right before Buffy busts in the mirror that leads to the elevator shaft.  She says "Game faces guys, we're going in."  In "Prophecy Girl", she told Angel he'd better his game face on right before she went up to face the master.  Nice.  Also, the picture of herself, Xander and Willow that she looks at is the same one from "Halloween" (s2) and "Dead Man's Party"  (s3).  I think we've also seen it in her room at the house before.  Nice touch :)    Too bad this wasn't the finale.  God, now I've gotta do Restless.  * sigh *

BEST LINE:

Giles:  (realizing he'd been duped by Spike, just like everyone else)  "Well Spike can be..he's very convincing when he..I'm very stupid."

and:

Xander:  "Spike's working for Adam?!  After all we've done forNah......, I can't even act surprised."
