We open on Willow at Oz's place. She wanders around the room looking lost and lonely, and missing Oz. She sits on the bed and smells one of his shirts.
The next morning at the student center Buffy comes across Riley helping to hang a banner for the Lesbian alliance. He reminds her of the picnic they'd been talking about, and Buffy's clueless until he remembers that was a conversation he'd been practicing, not one they'd actually had yet. He calls her beautiful and Buffy is flattered, and they make plans to have a picnic the next day. That night on patrol Buffy tells Willow about the picnic, and also about her trip to L.A. to confront Angel after "Pangs". She says it was painful seeing him again, but she wonders if a relationship with Riley could have the same kind of fire, without the intensity and pain and fighting that she had with Angel. A vampire jumps out and she stakes it, wondering where she gets that mentality from.
At Giles', Buffy questions Spike about the Initiative. Spike is chained up in the bathtub, and Giles brings in some blood for him in a mug with a straw. Buffy grimaces as she holds the mug for Spike while he sucks the blood up, and he says he doesn't know why she's so dainty about it, when she must've done this for Angel before. Buffy gets fed up and takes the mug away until he answers some questions. Spike doesn't believe that they'll let him live after he spills what he knows, but Giles says they have no intention to kill a harmless creature, but they need to know more about who did this to him. Buffy and Spike argue incessantly, and Buffy taunts him by exposing her neck to him. To get away from the bickering, Giles goes out into the main room where Willow suggests a truth spell. Giles is all for it, and Willow says she'll come by the next morning with the necessary ingredients. Back in the bathroom, Giles says he thinks Willow is coping better with Oz's departure, and Buffy agrees until Spike says she's hanging on by a thread; that any idiot could see that.
Cut to Oz's room. Willow comes in to find that all of Oz's stuff is gone; the room is stripped. Back at her dorm room, she sobs to Buffy that Devon said Oz sent for his stuff, and that this means he's decided to settle down somewhere else. Which means he'll be gone for a long time. Willow cries disconsolately, and says she feels so lost without Oz. Buffy tries to be supportive, but Willow is crushed.
The next morning Giles leaves a message on Willow and Buffy's machine asking where Willow is, 'cause she was supposed to come by and do that truth spell on Spike. Spike yells from the bathroom that he wants to watch Passions. The living arrangement is grating on both of their nerves. Cut to the park, where Riley and Buffy are doing their picnic thing. There's an undercurrent of attraction between them, but Willow comes up and interrupts. She starts to leave, feeling that she's interrupted, but Riley invites her to sit. She's still down, however, and she quickly brings everyone's spirits down, too. At the Bronze that night the gang discovers Willow drinking. She tells Buffy she just wants the pain to go away, but Buffy says she's got to just work through it. Willow doesn't want to; she wants it to just go "poof!".
That night we pan up from AmyRat in her cage, to Willow lying awake in bed. She gets up and removes some magical supplies from a chest at the foot of her bed. In the bathroom, she sits inside a ring of burning candles and does a spell to have her will be done. The next morning she tries to will her broken heart to mend, then a book to read its words to her, etc, but nothing happens. Giles comes in, and asks what happened to her the other day when she was supposed to show up and do the truth spell. Willow tells him she's still off because of the whole Oz thing. She tells him about the spell she did the night before, but reveals that it didn't work. Giles worries that her energies are too unfocused right now, and she might hurt herself if she does spells without supervision. Willow goes off the deep end and says no one just wants to be inconvenienced by her pain. Giles says he sees how she could feel that way, but Willow responds that he doesn't see anything. Her eyes glow briefly as she says this, and suddenly Giles is having trouble seeing. He leaves, saying they'll talk about it later. Back at his place, he tries to cast the spell on Spike himself, but he's having trouble reading the words from the book. When he takes a handkerchief out of his pocket to clean his glasses, the key to Spike's shackles falls out too, and Spike picks it up and frees himself. Pushing past Giles, Spike runs out into the night.
Back at the dorm room, Willow complains about Giles to Buffy as she cleans AmyRat's cage. The conversation turns to Willow's magic as AmyRat wanders around on Willow's bed. Willow says that she doesn't have half the power Amy has, but unwittingly turns the rat back into Amy, then back into a rat again during the course of her conversation. Neither Buffy nor Willow notice, as neither of them is facing the bed when this happens. Just then, Buffy gets a call from Giles about Spike's escape, and she takes off to go track him down. Willow's feeling kind of abandoned, and says Buffy will probably find him right away; he's probably just standing there. Her eyes glow, and we suddenly cut to Spike standing in a clearing on the campus, and Buffy runs into him right away. They're both surprised at how quickly she found him.
Buffy moves to take him back, but Spike says he recognizes where they are; this is where he escaped from the Initiative. But where he says there should be an air vent, there's nothing but dirt and grass.
In the bathroom, Giles puts drops in his eyes, as Buffy manhandles Spike back into the apartment. Cut to Willow complaining about Buffy to Xander in his basement. Xander tries to defend Buffy's need to get information from Spike, but Willow makes an offhand comment about Buffy liking Spike so much, she should marry him, and her eyes glow. Back at the apartment, Giles walks out of the bathroom to see Spike on his knees, proposing to Buffy. Buffy accepts, and Giles is flummoxed.
In Xander's basement, Xander tries to council Willow, but she points to his love bio, and says he's a demon magnet. Offscreen, we hear the sound that accompanies her eyes glowing. Back at Giles', Buffy and Spike discuss wedding preparations, and dissolve into a lover's quarrel, before making up with a kiss. As they basically make out in the living room in between spats, Giles tries to get himself drunk to avoid listening to it. Buffy shyly asks Giles if he'll give her away at the ceremony, and at first Giles is touched before her remembers that this is all insane, and goes to get another scotch. By this point, Giles' eyesight has deteriorated so badly that he's basically blind, and Buffy leaves Giles in Spike's care as she goes off to the Magic shop to get some ingredients for a general reversal spell, as they've figured out that some sort of spell was cast to make Giles go blind.
Outisde, Buffy is distracted after leaving the magic shop by some mannequins dressed in wedding dresses in another store window. Riley just happens to be walking by, and he stops to talk to her. During the course of the conversation Buffy tells him that she's getting married. Riley is stunned, and confused, and eventually leaves to get away from the confusion.
In Xander's basement, Anya and Xander start to make out but are interrupted by a demon bursting through the door. Xander immediately launches himself at it, but it throws him aside. Anya grabs a baseball bat and starts whacking it, as Xander tries to strangle it from behind with some clothesline. Anya identifies the type of demon and says drowning is the only way to kill it, and they trap it's head under the water in the basin down there. Suddenly another demon crashes through the window, and Xander and Anya run out.
Back at Giles', Buffy and Spike make more kissy face, while Giles is incredulous that the magic shop was out of one of the ingredients they needed. While he tries to keep himself from being sick at all of their making out, they talk about invitations. Just as they're getting into another tiff, Xander and Anya burst in and barricade the door. They tell the others about the demons following them, and learn that Giles is blind. Buffy also breaks the news that she and Spike are getting married, and Xander remembers Willow's comments. Then Giles does too, and they realize her "My will be done" spell worked, but she wasn't even aware of it. They decide they have to find her before someone gets really hurt.
Cut to the dorm. Willow enters her room and a large demon appears behind her and grabs her head. They disappear. Awhile later, Spike and the gang minus Giles enter the dorm room to find Willow gone, and a scorch mark on the floor. Anya says it's left behind when D'Hoffryn opens a portal; D'Hoffryn being the entity who made her (Anya) a demon 1120 years ago. Cut to D'Hoffryn, who offers Willow the same deal he did Anya; to elevate her to demon status, to wreak vengeance.
Back to the gang, as they head toward a tomb where Anya says she can summon D'Hoffryn from. On the way, they get attacked by some more demons. Buffy fights one of them off, and they run from the others into the tomb. Inside, Buffy and Spike grab the lid from a tomb and prop it up against the door, while Anya starts to try and summon D'Hoffryn. Meanwhile, D'Hoffryn tries to convince Willow to become a vengeance demon, citing current events as proof that she's ready for it. He shows her the fighting in the tomb, and Willow is shocked to see the carnage she caused. She turns down the offer, and asks to be returned to her friends.
Inside the tomb, Anya and Xander are beating one demon up, and Spike has been knocked down by another. Buffy goes to him to see if he's okay, and they end up kissing, passionately. Willow arrives in a burst of light, and does a reversal spell on her "Will be done" spell. The demons vanish, and Spike and Buffy both "wake up" from the spell to find themselves kissing. They each react with horror and revulsion, and break away from each other. Everyone looks at Willow.
At Giles', Willow is on a mad cookie-baking spree, trying to alleviate her guilt. She offers some to Giles, who complains that she didn't restore his vision to the extent that he'd have 20/20. She gives one to Buffy, and then Spike asks for one, because he's still got "Buffy taste" in his mouth. Buffy grimaces and walks away and Willow apologizes again. Buffy can't believe she actually * loved * him, and declares herself so totally over her bad boy phase. She then remembers that Riley thinks she's getting married and wonders what she's going to tell him.
The next day at school, Buffy tells Riley that when he saw her looking at the wedding dresses he looked afraid, and she thought she should give him a hard time about it. Riley asks, so she pretended to be married? Buffy says yeah, and Riley says she's insane. Buffy agrees, but Riley's happy that she's still single. Buffy comments that he's got a lot to learn about women, and Riley says that she's going to teach him.
FLAWS: none found.
THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE: Heh, I'll never get enough of this one. I'll admit it, I actually love this episode. Yeah, yeah, and it's even season 4 ;) This episode was pure filler, but it was great fun, and hilarious to boot. This was back when the idea of Buffy and Spike together was ludicrous, and that's what made it so funny. Even after the events of season 5 and 6, however, this episode is still worth it if only for their bickering, and the shocked reactions of everyone else. Quite possibly my favourite s4 episode : )
BEST LINE:
Spike: "Passions is on! Timmy's down the bloody well! And if you make me miss it I'll......"
Giles: "Do what? Lick me to death?!"
and:
Spike: (witnessing the scooby gang's ineptitude) "This is the crack team that foils my every plan? I am deeply shamed."
* and, inside the tomb:
Spike: "They're strong, and I can't fight. If they get in, I don't know if I can protect you."
Buffy: "You think you have to protect me?!"
Spike: "Oh not with the girl power bit!"
*warning: this last bit was only in the original version of this episode. This scene was cut from the FX re-run version.
and:
Spike: "Don't * I * get a cookie?" Buffy: "No." Spike: "Well I've got to have something. I've still got Buffy taste in my mouth."
