The gang, with Faith and Giles, slays a demon in a subterranean lair. Afterward, Xander picks himself up off the ground after NOT having been a help. They all express concern that Xander's gonna get himself killed one of these times. The next morning at school, Xander makes a bit of a fool of himself on the quad. In the process, he's threatened by a menacing looking guy named Jack O'Toole. Afterward, Cordelia makes fun of him, telling him he has nothing to offer the group, and she leaves him standing with nothing to say. At lunch Xander obsesses to Oz about how he needs to find some special thing to make him be unique and cool. In the library, Giles identifies the demons they killed the night before as sisters of the Sheay (sp?), and says they haven't seen the last of them. They're goal is to open the Hellmouth. In the course of their conversation, Oz comes into the library and enters the cage, turning into a werewolf.
The next day Buffy tells Willow about the possible re-opening of the Hellmouth, and asks her to help. She DOESN'T say anything to Xander later, however, when he shows up with a cool 57 Chevy Bel-Air. Apparently he''s watching it for his uncle Rory, or something. The gang sends him to get donuts, where he has another confrontation with Cordelia just before a beautiful woman comes up and asks him for a ride in his car. He goes to the Bronze with the woman, who then bores him to tears with car talk all night. Angel shows up looking for Buffy, and Xander wants to go with him to the library to get her, but Angel tells him he should stay there 'out of harm's way'.Outside, he accidentally drives the Chevy into the car in front of him....that just happens to belong to Jack O'Toole. At the library, Buffy and Willow and Giles all try to figure out when this reoppening is going to happen, but the Council won't even return his calls. Back outside the Bronze, Jack threatens Xander with a knife, but is stopped by a patrolling nightwatchman. Xander doesn't turn him in, and Jack seems to respect him for it. He invites Xander and the woman to go with him to go "get the rest of the boys". They take Xander's car, since the other one wasn't actually his. Cut to the cemetery, where Jack performs a ritual over a jock's grave, and causes his corpse to rise. The corpse acted like he was waiting for it, and they set off to get the rest of the guys. Elsewhere in the cemetery, Giles is trying to conjure up some spirits to find answers as to what they can do to defeat the sisters of Sheay. He runs into Xander, who tries to latch on to him to 'help', but Giles sends him away to stay out of trouble.
At Willie's Buffy finds Willie beaten up on the ground. Apparently the demons already come to his place looking for Angel, and Buffy too, to keep them from interfering with the ritual that night. Buffy calls an ambulance for him, and Willie warns her of what will happen if the Hellmouth opens. Cruising in Xander's car, the gang of dead guys want to go wreak revenge upon the people who killed them, but they ultimately decide to go "make a cake". To get the ingredients, they brake into a hardware store. While Xander's waiting outside, he sees Willow buying some supplies from the magic shop. She hints at the horrible thing that's happening that night, that Xander has no idea what it is, then leaves. Xander, going back to the car, finds out that Jack's dead, too, and was raised by his grandfather three weeks earlier after he died in a drive-by shooting. Xander manages to elude the guys, and takes off. Moments later, he encounters Faith fighting some more of the sisters of Sheay, and who is getting the crap beat out of her. Xander hits it with the car, and Faith jumps in. They drive back to her motel room, where they Faith is driven wild by her surging hormones (she always gets horny after fighting), and has sex with Xander. Afterward, she sends him on his merry way with no intimacy involved. Out in the car, Xander is blown away by the fact that he just had sex. He looks at the supplies that the dead guys threw in his car and realize that "making a cake" was synonymous with "making a bomb". Back at the library, Giles and Willow let Oz out of his cage and tranquilize him, so they can move him somewhere else. In case they end up having to try to fight the creature from the Hellmouth. They lock Oz in a room in the basement of the school.
Having figured out that the dead guys are going to blow up the school, Xander heads there to stop them. While Buffy, Angel, Willow and Giles fight the Hellmouth demon in the library, Xander is downstairs in the basement with Jack. Jack taunts him, and tells him basically all the same stuff that Cordelia does every time they meet; that he's a loser, has nothing to contribute to the world, etc. In a really pitiful attempt at a storyline, Xander apparently has some confidence now after having sex with Faith, or something, and talks the guy down, and he defuses the bomb. Trying to leave, Jack opens a door in the basement and runs right into Oz as a werewolf. The next day, Oz feels oddly full, as the gang reflect on each other's bravery from the night before. They're all glad that they were able to keep Xander out of it, so he wouldn't be hurt. Xander has his newfound confidence from having saved everyone, even if they don't know about it. Cordelia tries to put him down, but has no more effect on him.
FLAWS: Beyond the fact that they shot Oz with tranquilizers twice and he still woke up before sunrise? None.
THOUGHT ON THE EPISODE: It sucked. I'd have to say that I liked this one almost as little as "Dead Man's Party"..which, as you know, is my all-time least favorite episode of Buffy. I hate Xander anyway, anymore, so this was just even more fun with him off screwing Faith, five minutes after seeing Willow for perhaps the last time in the street, when she told him she loved him. I'm not big on casual sex anyway, so I kind of had a problem with this episode. And then to compound it, by having Xander be all confident and stuff afterward, just made me sick. This episode was a waste. Especially since there was hardly any Angel in it.
BEST LINE: When Giles is talking about how how the Council won't return his calls, he's saying:
Giles "All we know is that the entire fate of the world rests on the..." (looks down at the donuts) "Did you eat all the jellies?"
Buffy: "Did you want a jellie?"
Giles: "I always have a jellie. I'm always the one who says "let's throw a jellie in the mix" "
