We open with Xander and Anya in bed together. Xander talks about how Riley's gone, and Anya wonders if maybe it's Buffy; maybe she just is doing something wrong. Xander says he doesn't think it's anything Buffy's doing wrong, but wonders how she's dealing with it now that Man # 2 has left the building. We cut to a convent, and we're supposed to believe Buffy's gone and become a nun, or something. Some vampires attack a nun, and Buffy shows up and stakes him. Buffy helps the nun up and starts barraging her about questions on being a nun, and giving up men and stuff.
The next day Buffy trains with Giles in the back room of the Magic Box, and Giles informs her that he's contacted the Watcher's Council to see if they can provide any information about Glory. Buffy's worried that when he tells them about the Key, they'll figure out somehow that it's Dawn, but Giles promises he won't tell them that part. Out front later, Giles prepares to go to England to meet with the council. Anya's excited because she gets to be in charge of the store for the whole week, but Giles is worried that she won't be able to take care of it all by herself. The rest of the gang volunteers to help, and Anya is aggravated that no one but Xander thinks she can handle it on her own. Giles says it's just that she doesn't really possess any people skills, and this further agitates Anya, and she and Willow quickly get into another tiff, both trying to get Xander to side with them. Xander's torn.
Back at the Summers house, Buffy and Dawn are happy that Joyce is up and feeling better. Buffy and Dawn then go into Buffy's room, and Dawn asks her about Riley. Buffy says it still hurts that he's gone, and in a way she blames herself. Dawn reassures her that it'll get better. Buffy says who knows, maybe Riley will even come back, and she'll get a chance to say all the things she didn't before.
Cut to Spike in his crypt, holding a box of chocolates in front of the buffy-quin. He practices talking to the slayer, and says there's something he's been meaning to tell her. In his own imaginary conversation, it quickly turns into an argument and in a rage he beats the crap out of the buffy-quin with the box of chocolates. Spent, he realizes he lost his temper and picks it back up and starts again.
At the magic shop, Anya gets angry with Tara and Willow when they "borrow" some ingredients from the shop to work on a sunlight spell that Buffy might be able to use on vamps. Xander comes in and they each try to get him on their side again, and he tells them he's not going to be pulled into the middle of it. Willow, trying to prove her case, accidentally makes the cash register disappear. Anya freaks out, and Willow makes it reappear, but it's trashed. Xander gets annoyed when they continue to try to bring him into the argument, and he leaves. They turn to Tara next, and Tara wisely follows Xander.
Later, Willow continues to work on the ball of sunshine spell, and Anya adds up all the money she owes for the ingredients she's using. Willow tells Anya to be quiet, and starts the spell. Anya interrupts several times, and finally Willow's angry enough to leave the spell half-done and confronts Anya. They argue a bit, and the spell goes out of control and suddenly a big toll guy appears. He's got a big-ass hammer, which he uses to smash the shop to bits, and then storms out the door. Anya and Willow look shell-shocked.
After class, Buffy and Tara talk about how Anya and Willow were arguing earlier, and Xander left. Buffy takes it all wrong and thinks that Xander left Anya, and breaks into tears. She clings to Tara and says they can't break up; they have a miraculous love. (* insert gag here *)
Cut to Anya and Willow in Giles' car, following the path of the troll's destruction; Anya is driving. Willow rifles through some papers, wondering how they even created the troll. Anya says he must have been trapped in a crystal that was next to the ingredients Willow was using for the spell, and she released him. During the course of the conversation, Anya reveals that she doesn't know how to drive. She takes a turn really sharply, and Willow loses some of her papers.
At the Bronze, Xander runs into Spike, who follows him just to annoy him. He notices that Xander's pretty peckish, and wonders if it has something to with Buffy. He angles for information about whether or not she's mad at him for showing her Riley's suckfest, but Xander says it doesn't have anything to do with Buffy. Cut to Buffy and Tara at the Magic Box, having found the big old mess the troll left. Tara is worried that Willow might be hurt, and they leave to go track whatever did this. Meanwhile, the Troll wanders the streets of Sunnydale causing havoc.
Back at the Bronze, Spike and Xander are now playing a game of pool. Xander's saying how Willow and Anya are always dragging him into their fights, and while Willow is his best friend and he values her opinion, Anya's his girlfriend. Spike says he understands; a lot of people never really got Dru. Spike turns the conversation back to Buffy, and Xander wonders what the deal is. They're interrupted by the Troll, who's come in looking for "Ale". He grabs a half-keg and starts drinking it. He then wants some babies to eat, and asks Xander and Spike where he can find some. In a humorous moment, Spike turns to Xander and goes "What do you think, the hospital?" Xander looks back at Spike and goes "What? Shut up!" The Troll wanders off to drink some more "ale", and Buffy and Anya come in. Spike greets Buffy, but she doesn't even pay attention to him. Anya tells Willow to do the spell, and the Troll says he heard that, and that "Anyanka" is trying to ruin his fun, just like she did when they were dating. Everyone's surprised and turns to Anya. She explains that he wasn't always a troll; in fact she's the one who turned him into one after he cheated on her. The toll whines how he didn't cheat in his heart, and he'd been drunk, blah blah, and how witches had imprisoned him in that crystal. Willow tries to do the reversal spell, but it doesn't work, and as she searches for another way to reverse him, Buffy attacks the Troll, and Spike backs her up. During the fight, Buffy gets thrown into Spike and he manages to grab a handful as she jumps back to her feet. The Troll swings his hammer and takes out a few beams, and the upper level collapses, falling down on Buffy and several Bronzers.
Spike pulls part of the catwalk up off of Buffy, and she jumps up to find that the Troll skidaddled. She orders Willow and Anya to try to find a way to reverse the spell, as she tries to free the people trapped in wreckage. She notices Spike helping one woman who's injured, and asks him what he's doing. He says he's helping, not tasting, because he knew she wouldn't like it. Buffy says he's disgusting for wanting credit for not feeding off of bleeding disaster victims, and stalks off. Frustrated, Spike whines "What's it take!"
Back at the magic shop, Anya and Willow look for another spell they can use to defeat the Troll. They quickly get into another fight, but this time the true reasons are revealed as Anya realizes that Willow's worried Anya, as an ex demon, and someone who hurt men for a thousand years, will hurt Xander. And Willow realizes that Anya's insecure because Willow knows Xander so well, and broke him and Cordelia up. They're each worried about Xander getting hurt. Just then the Troll crashes through the door. He tosses the girls across the counter, and Xander runs in and yells for him to get away from them. Xander tries to fight the troll, but mostly just gets his ass thrashed. The troll is impressed by Xander's unwillingness to be defeated, however, and tells him he can choose which of "his women" will die. Xander refuses to choose, and the troll breaks his wrist. Xander still refuses, and the troll says that Xander will then be the one to die. Anya shouts no, and says for him to take her, instead, but just then Buffy runs in and engages the troll in battle. Anya shouts that the troll's strength is in his hammer.
Anya distracts the troll while Willow comes up with a spell to take the hammer away from him, which she does, and Buffy fights him. He asks her "what are you fighting for, miniscule blonde one?" He wonders why she's fighting to protect Xander and Anya, and says that their love will never last. Buffy, all tender and, you know, heartbroken over Riley gets all riled up (heh) and manages to defeat the troll with her newly found 2nd wind.
Later, Willow does a spell on the troll that sends him to an alternate dimension full of trolls. Buffy goes off onto a weepy tangent like she did before with Tara, all sobbing and happy that Anya and Xander are together and happy, blah blah.
The next evening, at the Summers house, Giles has returned and says that he's informed the Council of everything he knows about Glory. Buffy wonders if they're "all over" the key, and Giles says yeah, they're interested. She wonders what'll happen if they find out it's Dawn, and Giles doesn't know. Joyce says she can't even think about it, and the camera pans over to the stairs on the other side of the wall, where Dawn has heard the end part of the conversation.
FLAWS: In this episode Anya reveals that she doesn't know how to drive. Yet in "Graduation Day pt. 2", she comes in and tells Xander that she's leaving before the Ascension, she wants him to come with her, and that her car is right outside.
THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE: Okay. I was *way * annoyed with the "fragile Buffy" scenes. Practically everyone I know thought she was hilarious, but I just found it aggravating. The rest of the ep wasn't bad, though. The troll was pretty funny, and the Spike / Xander interaction was hilarious, as usual.
As far as set up goes, we learn only that Buffy's dealing with Riley having left, Spike's still got a yen for Buffy, but she doesn't even notice him, Anya and Willow finally manage to settle most of their differences, and Dawn continues to suspect that there's something wrong with her.
BEST LINE:
Willow: "I wish Buffy were here."
(Buffy comes in): "I'm here!"
Willow: "I wish I had a million dollars!"
